I think you have to edit Makefile.in in the source directory and uncomment
the bit:
AUTH_OPT = # -DUSE_PROXY_AUTH=1

i.e. change it to:
AUTH_OPT = -DUSE_PROXY_AUTH=1

Then do a "make realclean", run "configure" and then do a "make" again.
