connections to DNSservers die ...

I have a problem with Squid 1.1.x (tried 1.1.3, 1.1.6, 1.1.7, 1.1.8) on
Linux (2.0.25):
after about a day or somewhat less the connections from Squid to the
dnsserver processes die one after the other. Squid still happily lives on
(as do the dnsservers), but nothing works, of course. I then have to kill
the dnsservers one by one (manually) and restart Squid ...

Any ideas what's going on here?
How can I narrow down the problem?
Any ideas about workarounds?

PS: I had Squid 1.0.17 (?) running on Linux 2.0.9 for months without the
slightest problem ...
