Malcolm,

        Sorry, misunderstood the question. ;-) I picked up on a few words
then gave you answer for what I thought you really wanted.

        OK, now I will give you the answer you really wanted. The best
way to implement the solution you want is to write a proxy automatic
configuration script for your browser. These are quite good, and you just
tell your clients the URL.

        Here is some info on how to write one.
