I've nearly the same (software) System. 3.2C, 128 MB real, 256 MB swap ...
and no problem (vever had), but
I know there are some problems with a special sort of hardware of the
ethernet-chip on some alphas (not ours). There are patches available for
this at
http://www.service.digital.com/html/patch_service.html
look into the appr. section for OSF 3.2 and read the readmes from around
April/May this year ...
