RE: Squid on DECUnix (was Stop - Start...)

I have squids running on both OSF v3.2g and v4.0b, and default kernel
setting for filedescriptors is set at 4096..

98/02/17 14:53:08| Starting Squid Cache version 1.1.18 for
alpha-dec-osf3.2...
98/02/17 14:53:08| With 4096 file descriptors available

98/02/17 15:06:15| Starting Squid Cache version 1.1.18 for
alpha-dec-osf4.0...
98/02/17 15:06:15| With 4096 file descriptors available

But then of course my usage doesn't even touch 500, therefore I can't
comment when filedescriptor usage rises above 1000...

That would be my gut feeling, but I don't think the gut feeling of one
person is
enough to make this sort of decision on. It's quite possible that
there are setups
using digital unix that _don't_ experience this problem at all. If so,
I'm sure
they'll put their hands up.

Personally, when there's performance issues like this, I prefer to
_test_ a setup,
before I commit.
