A striped hard disk is when you have several harddrives logically
combined into one large, with the data interleaved on all drives (the
first blocks on drive 1, then on drive 2, drive 3, ..., drive 1, drive2,
drive 3,... ,...).
This is probably the recommended setup for a 1.1.X Squid as it
transforms the disks into one large and fast disk, which is much easier
to maintain.
For 1.2 i'd recommend using one single (non-striped) cache partition on
harddrive instead. It allows a better I/O pattern in total, and the
bonus of easy crash recovery (if one drive fails, you only lose that
piece of the cache).
