My few cents as well, I've got an RH5.1 test proxy (it runs in under production
loads but I keep a real close eye on it) with Linux 2.0.35+3KFD. It seems fine,
typically using 2-10% CPU (P2-266/512M/45G). I'm using async IO and SNMP. It
gets around 500k lines a day in the access logs.
I once pestered Alan Cox about 3K FD being standard or optional within the
kernel, but he said the patch made the kernel slower (also said wait for
2.2 which will have 30K FDs...). The 2.0.36 preview kernel also has IP
port forwarding as standard (with equal or weight balanced round robin -
no builtin server failure detect though).
That's enough brackets from me.
