It does not matter much if you run a local DNS server is local, or run
as a client to a DNS server on the same LAN.
Running a local DNS server has a benefit from not being dependent on any
other machine on your network. The downside is that you have yet another
service running on the server that needs to be watched for errors and
hacking attempts.
