Progress on SquidFS?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew what stage the implementation of the
long-awaited SquidFS is at? I know the 2.3 dev version has a disk API but
there doesn't seem to be any sign of a custom FS to make use of it. What
are the timescales for beta code?

The reason I ask is that we have reached the point where adding servers to
our cache farm is no longer viable. We're already pushing the hardware to
the limit and I've experimented with other filesystems such as ReiserFS. We
now need a step change in performance and as much as I love Squid it looks
like we will have to consider commercial alternatives. Peregrine proved
that high performance and standard hardware were not mutually exclusive and
it would be useful to know if Squid is likely to move in that direction
sooner rather than later.

Regards,
Simon.
