Squid -z won't work

Thanks to all those who replied. Using ./squid -z gives me the following
error message:

1999/11/10 17:39:18| Creating Swap Directories
FATAL: Failed to make swap directory /cache/00: (13) Permission denied
Squid Cache (Version 2.2.STABLE5): Terminated abnormally.

The cache directory is on a seperate drive. Any help appreciated.
