Correct. Proxy authentication is only possible when configured to use a
proxy. This is because the browser needs to be aware that it is using a
proxy in order to perform the needed operations.
This is part of the end-to-end assumption of TCP/IP which every Internet
protocol (including HTTP) builds upon, both for functionality and
security. "transparent" port redirection violates this basic property of
TCP/IP networking.
