[squid-users] New squid machines.

Hello all,
 
I have been set the task of spec-ing up machines to replace our existing
cache setup. So I'm afraid I'm about to ask you loads of questions.
 
I want to cluster/load balance 2 maybe 3 possibly 4 machines for better peak
performance and better resilience over our existing systems. I am open to
suggestions though.
 
Firstly,
Bearing in mind cost (Assume 15K GB pounds) what is my best option Sun or
Intel?
 
These machines are purely for running squid on, so they can be tailored for
this purpose.
 
What spec should I be looking at, what is more important?
how much disk space
how much RAM
RAID?
single or duel processor
 
What methods of load balancing/clustering are available? How reliable are
they.
 
We currently run Squid 2.2Stable5 should I be looking into upgrading this?
What kind of overhead does authentication through Squid place on the Squid
servers.
 
If there was a slow machine in the cluster would it have an effect on the
other servers?
