You're right. It's a problem in the NT authentication scheme. When an user
has an empty password, the NT session setup that the SMB (formerly known
as NTLMSSP) helper uses gets dropped by the domain controller, event
which is regarded as an authentication error. This does not depend on
whether the user
actually has a blank password or not.
