I've just noticed a couple of other errors in cache.log:
2003/08/20 13:44:43| Attempt to lower Auth User request 0x8514958
refcount below 0!
2003/08/20 13:55:23| assertion failed: authenticate.h:140:
"(!state() && aState) || (state() && !aState)"
These errors also occur several times, and Squid restarts after
these, as well.

I will test some more to see if the login prompt corresponds with the
