i presume squid is launched ?
when i try

[root@mandrake bin]# ps -aux |grep squid
Bad syntax, perhaps a bogus '-'?
root 2268 0.0 0.6 6428 2832 pts/2 T 11:51 0:00 vi squid.out
root 2453 0.1 0.6 6428 2824 pts/2 S 11:57 0:00 vi squid.out
