Strange though. When I telnet to the squid port or use LWP perl library to request a page via the proxy I don't see the Via header. Do you know why this might be?

Strange , are you sure X-Forwarded-for is not there, try :
look for 'Forwarded' or the resulting ip address which indicates , whether
this header is being detected.
