I can confirm on squid-3.2.2-20121017-r11687 when squid start, show
this :
With 65535 file descriptors available
but when one of the workers crash or i run a squid -k reconfigure, show
this on logs :
WARNING: max_filedescriptors disabled. Operating System
setrlimit(RLIMIT_NOFILE) is missing.
