For what it is worth, the -h option is being deprecated in favour -H
which does have the advantage that you can specify multiple ldap servers
just in case one is down:
ldapsearch -x -D
cn='BINDUSER,ou=SOMETHING,ou=SOMETHING,dc=mydomain,dc=net' -b
'dc=mydomain,dc=net' '(cn=USERTOLOOKFOR)'
-H ldap://ldap.mydomain.net:389,ldap://ldap2.mydomain.net -W
